A comprehensive approach to safety

Having a safe community is vital for the University, our students, faculty, researchers, staff, visitors, and South Side neighbors. UChicago takes a comprehensive approach to maintaining a high level of safety on our campus and in our community, and we are investing in new approaches and ideas to further enhance safety in the future. Our actions range from providing robust public safety and transportation services, to conducting research in many fields to address the root causes of crime and collaborating with community organizations on their efforts to prevent violence, as we work to keep members of our community safe.

This website is designed to highlight some of this work and to provide up-to-date information on the efforts underway to make our campus and neighboring communities safer.

How we're working toward change

Protecting our community

Our campus is in one of Chicago's most vibrant and thriving neighborhoods, where community members work together to help enhance safety. The University is regularly adding new safety services and resources to help our community that lives and works near our Hyde Park campus, and visitors to our area.

Investing in our future

We are partnering to build safe communities over the long term. The University is collaborating with scholars and community organizations to understand and address the root causes of crime and violence, working together to identify and implement effective prevention and violence reduction programs.
